Text Box: Mersea Island lies at the confluence of the Rivers Colne and Blackwater and is the most Easterly inhabited island in the UK with a population of around 7000 people.  Most live in West Mersea which retains a friendly, village atmosphere with East Mersea largely given over to agriculture.
The Island’s key industry is seafood with Mersea native oysters gracing menus in many of the country’s leading restaurants.  There are numerous small businesses supporting the needs of the local community together with a school and doctor and dental surgeries.
Sports clubs and leisure organisations abound with the most popular being sailing which is supported by two clubs and a host of parent and volunteer helpers.
